Account
On 18 November 1803, Haitian forces fought the French army at Vertières in northern Saint-Domingue. The battle became the decisive military engagement of the Haitian Revolution before French forces withdrew and Haiti declared independence in 1804.
Significance
Vertières marked the decisive defeat of the remaining French expeditionary forces in Saint-Domingue.
