Methodology and integrity
A historical claim is worth exactly as much as the evidence behind it. This page explains how we mark each record, how we measure the strength of evidence, and how a record reaches publication. We publish these rules before we publish the records so you can judge the work.
Trust marks
Every record carries one of these marks. The mark tells you where the material came from — it is not decoration.
- Verified HistoryAP-HI-VH
- Reviewed by the editorial team and corroborated by at least one primary or scholarly source.
- Primary SourceAP-HI-PS
- A document or record created at the time of the events it describes.
- Scholarly SourceAP-HI-SS
- Published research by historians or academic institutions.
- Oral HistoryAP-HI-OH
- First-hand testimony. It is evidence of memory; we do not treat it as documentary proof unless another source corroborates it.
- Community ContributionAP-HI-CC
- Submitted by a member of the community and not yet independently verified.
- Disputed ClaimAP-HI-DC
- Credible sources disagree. We show both readings with the evidence for each.
- Under ReviewAP-HI-UR
- Submitted and awaiting editorial review. Not yet published as verified.
- TranslatedAP-HI-TR
- The text shown is a translation. We record who translated it and its review status.
- Original ScanAP-HI-OS
- A digital reproduction of the physical original.
- Editor's IllustrationAP-HI-EI
- Artwork made for this module. It is an illustration — not a photograph and not a historical document.
Evidence strength
When a claim is linked to sources, we state what kind of support those sources actually give it.
- Direct primaryDIRECT_PRIMARY
- A primary source states the claim directly.
- Primary supportingPRIMARY_SUPPORTING
- A primary source supports the claim without stating it outright.
- Multiple secondaryMULTIPLE_SECONDARY
- Several independent secondary sources agree.
- Single secondarySINGLE_SECONDARY
- One secondary source supports it.
- Oral testimonyORAL_TESTIMONY
- Recorded testimony, without separate documentary corroboration.
- Community claimCOMMUNITY_CLAIM
- Contributed by the community and not yet corroborated.
- DisputedDISPUTED
- The sources conflict with one another.
- Insufficient evidenceINSUFFICIENT
- Not enough evidence to publish as fact.
How a record reaches publication
No submission enters verified history directly. Every record moves through these states, and every change is recorded.

Artwork and portraits
Portraits, banners, and historical scenes we create are editorial illustrations. They are not documents and they do not depict anyone's real likeness. We label them everywhere they appear — including the artwork at the top of this page.
Languages
Kreyòl, French, and English are the module's three languages. Kreyòl is authored here, not machine-translated. A machine translation never becomes “verified” on its own.
Correct us
If you find an error, or hold a source that contradicts what we published, report it. Historical disagreement is not deleted — we mark it as disputed and show the evidence on both sides.
